We analyze the allocation of heterogeneous experts to teams of fixed size. Experts differ in the precision of their information about an unknown state and make a joint decision, aggregating their potentially correlated information. In this setting, we study the assortative matching properties (Becker (1973)) of teams. The main insight is that in most cases, the optimal matching contains no team with uniformly better experts than another team. It is therefore optimal to diversify the composition of the teams. This diversification reduces to negative assortative matching (NAM) when teams consist of pairs of experts. And when experts’ signals are conditionally independent, diversification leads to balanced teams of similar precision. We extend the model to introduce heterogeneous firms in which the teams operate, and analyze how to endogenize the size of the teams.
